Event Duration: 120 minutes

Australian politicians are protected by laws which prevent any footage of Parliament being used for satire or parody. This is amongst several restrictions on what can be broadcast from the houses of Parliament.

Join Craig Reucassel from The Chaser’s War on Everything and The Hamster Wheel, as he discusses how this affects free speech in Australia. How it doesn’t protect politicians from scorn, how it no longer makes sense in the days of Youtube and how the Parliament has responded to calls for changes to the law.

Craig Reucassel's lecture is part of Sydney PEN's Free Voices lecture and essay program, running from 2012 to 2014 using funds granted by Copyright Agency Limited. The program is designed to build public awareness and concern about freedom of expression, and to galvanise a larger, broader demographic of supporters who will challenge human rights abuses and stand up for the freedom to write and read. It offers new and established writers the opportunity to raise or utilise their profile and express their commitment to freedom of expression in a contemporary context.
