Workers at the Coles distribution centre in Somerton are currently negotiating their agreement with third party logistics provider Toll Holdings. The workers expect a difficult bargaining process. The Red Rockets of Borneo, The Operators and Chemistry Set will play this gig to help raise funds to boost the workers negotiations. As workers caught in the middle of a price war between Coles and Woolworths these NUW members bear the brunt of cost cutting. Red Rockets of Borneo are from Melbourne. Propelling heat-seeking, guitar-driven rock missiles in rapid-fire succession at their audience; their live shows explode off the stage. The band were together a full year before playing their first gig in 2010. In that year Red Rockets of Borneo produced a film clip and their first album, which was later launched to a sold-out crowd at the Old Bar in March 2011.
The self-titled album was quick to achieve critical kudos and medium to high rotation on PBS FM and Triple-R FM - as well as a spot on Triple-R’s Soundscape (Top 10 Listing).
The Operators are a local Melbourne outfit influenced by the rocksteady, soul and reggae sounds of the 1960s. The group bring a unique Melbourne punk influence to a classic genre. The group has energy and their live performance of originals and classics have been well received at venues around Melbourne. The group features NUW members.
Chemistry Set make music for modern pop enthusiasts. The band was formed in 2006 by Denny Cruse, who had grown tired of playing songs exclusively in his bathroom, and tentatively invited brother Tim Nelthorpe to form a band. The band has since done the rounds of Melbourne's flourishing live music scene.
Their music can broadly be described as 'alternative' or 'indie' - minimal, dynamic and restless; the sonic equivalent of a band attempting to convert their garage into a laboratory.
