Event Duration: 210 minutes
The release of his 2008 album Dreamers of the World Unite established Dan Lethbridge as one of Melbourne's most likeable and idiosyncratic songwriters. Lauded as 'an excellent alt. country album by a fine local talent, and a remarkably assured debut’ (Inpress), the record sealed Dan’s seduction of Melbourne’s live music scene, taking him on tour across Australia before winding up at New York's famed Rockwood Music Hall.
Having taken a short hiatus to indulge his passion – playing guitar for a smattering of Melbourne musical luminaries – Dan is now back to claim centre-stage with his highly-anticipated second album, Oh Hawke (released 10th April). Named after the street on which it was recorded, Oh Hawke captures a rawer Lethbridge; a disarmingly intimate collection of songs recorded on a 16-track and mixed by ARIA award winner Shane O’Mara (Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, The Audreys).
Oh Hawke is a brutally candid record. It fronts up to the monotony of modern life, picks at the carcass of long-term love and unleashes Lethbridge’s bewilderment at his own dissatisfaction.
The album showcases Lethbridge’s musical diversity, ranging from the anthemic saxophone riff of the opener Saturday Night Fever, through the edgier rock of Wish For What You Had to the country lament Hard To Fight (featuring the inimitable Tracy McNeil).
Throughout it all, Lethbridge melds meticulous songcraft and distinctive vocals against a cornerstone of timeless guitar work. Having shaken the heart out of you, Oh Hawke ultimately provides deliverance. Dan Lethbridge, with his five-piece band The Campaigners, will be supported by The Lisa Miller Trio and Young Werther along with special guests Tracy McNeil and Shane O’Mara. A national tour will follow.
