Now entering the third event of it’s kind, Word Is Born aims to both merge the hip hop and poetry communities, as well as inviting word enthusiasts outside of these markets in Melbourne to witness pieces and learn about these acts and other affiliated events.

This Word Is Born event pays tribute to one of the world’s greatest word-smiths, the late Gil Scott-Heron, and will be hosted by hip hop and spoken word icons Joelistics (TZU, Elefant Tracks) and Omar Musa (2008 Australian Poetry Slam Champion).

The 20 strong acts will include Emilie Zoey Baker (winner 2010 International Slam Review), Candice Monique, Sean M. Whelan & Isnod, Elf Tranzporter, Steve Smart (founder of Overload Poetry Festival), Joel McKerrow (Centre for Poetics and Justice, Global Poetics Tour), Nour Abouzeid (State Champion 2010 Australian Poetry Slam), Randall Stephens (Sweetalkers), Michelle Dabrowski (founding co-ordinator of the Throw Poetry Collective, Montreal), Ee’da (Holographic Love EP), Lotus, Ollie MC, Link McElvenny (Squid Squad, Inkstain Pro), Meena Shamalay, Ali MC (New Dub City Sound) Vytal One & Muma Doesa (Blunt Paper Massive).
