King of Bangor is a new one act play by renowned Australian playwright, Lee Gambin. A spine chilling glimpse into the world of one the horror genre’s most prolific writers (as well as one of the most reclusive) this is a venture into the world of Stephen King.
In oppressive darkness, successful novelist Stephen King sits on his throne mapping out a new story of the macabre. But there is a problem; he’s stuck. Writer’s block has set in. But soon familiar voices offer advice and King begins to type: the flow comes and goes just as distractions and inspirations surface - then disappear then reappear. Real life begins to merge with his creative stream of consciousness and his creations start to mirror and comment on his own existence in a terrifying downward spiral.
What will happen to the artist and his creations when the narrow divide between fact and fiction melt?
Under the direction of inspired young theatre maker Dione Joseph be prepared for a scintillating journey that takes you deep within the world of a writer struggling with a tyrannical block.
King of Bangor examines the relationship between a writer and his work: the truths and alternative truths that emerge from a writer’s fictitious creations; creations that not only taunt and mislead the artist but also embody those lone freedoms and personal triumphs of the not-so-mad creator.
From the lonely cry of the outsider in Carrie to the complexities of obsession and ownership in Christine to domestic unrest in The Shining, King of Bangor offers its audience a glimpse into the dilemmas one must face when creativity can prove dangerous.
