Event Duration: 70 minutes

Come into the world of Christina Stead... writer, romantic adventurer, rationalist and ruthlessly honest observer of life.

Described by Patrick White as 'a novelist of genius', and considered one of Australia's greatest writers, Christina Stead (1902 - 1983) displays a remarkable range of character, situation, language, theme and atmosphere.  Her power, insight and striking imagery can be seen on every page she wrote.

Experience, the love, passion, anger, and intense artistic commitment of this controversial writer. The play, both biography and showcase, interweaves her story as woman and artist with vivid interpretations from some of her finest works.

With Olivia Brown as Christina Stead, written and directed by Darryl Emmerson, I Write What See features extracts from several major works including The Man Who Loved Children, sometimes called the greatest novel written by an Australian.

"I Write What I See serves to remind audiences of Stead’s vibrant novelistic art, the power and style of her characters and dialogue [Olivia] Brown is very good at manifesting the suppressed intensity at the heart of Stead’s character… and her reading from The Man Who Loved Children is highly charged with the emotion of the text."
- Martin Ball, The Age, October 2010

"If Darryl Emmerson’s play does nothing more than remind us just how radical a writer Christina Stead was, and inspire us to read more of, and more widely from, her body of powerful and feminised work, then it will have served a purpose … Emmerson is a skilled poet and lyricist, and his words sing."
- Chris Boyd, Herald Sun, October 2010
