Asbestos Awareness Week 23 - 27 November

Join two authors of recently published books on the asbestos plague in conversation with Raphael Epstein.

Matt Peacock in conversation with Gideon Haigh.

Together with the Trades Hall, and in light of Asbestos Awareness Week, Readings brings you a conversation between authors Gideon and Matt.  Matt's book, Killer Company rips the cloak of secrecy from one of the greatest corporate scandals in Australia's history. Matt's research, over 30 years, involves documents and interviews with over a hundred former Hardie employees and other key figures. It reveals in stark detail how the company subverted the institutions designed to protect ordinary citizens, and how a dedicated group of unionists, lawyers and activists finally exposed Hardie's subterfuge.

Gideon Haigh's powerfully written book, Asbestos House also provides a valuable account of that legacy but the author goes out of his way to avoid turning it into an indictment. This is not to say that the warnings and premonitions weren't there. It was more a case of the directors and executives tip-toeing around the elephant in the lounge room.

Free entry.
