After a big 2016 including supports for Willie Watson (ex Old Crow Medicine Show), Joshua Hedley (fiddle player for Jonny Fritz, Justin Townes Earle and a host of others), Joe Pug (USA), and appearing as guest singer at shows with Robert Ellis and The Perfect Strangers during their Australian tour, performing at Out On The Weekend, and releasing her accomplished live, old-time and country album The Unceremonious Junking of Me, Hollick headed into the studio in December to start work on a new EP.
Expect to see a showcase of the material from the new EP, the recent album, and some Dolly Parton/ Ernest Tubb for good measure. If you like country music including acts like The Carter Family, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch, Patsy Cline and old-time Appalachian music, then Freya Josephine Hollick's music is for you. Her voice and songs are some of the most authentic country getting around, and will certainly take you back through time to the front porches of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
Mikelangelo & Anushka
Singer, songwriter and frontman extraordinaire, Mikelangelo is a unique and beloved figure in the Australian musical landscape. From his long term band of 16 years, the Black Sea Gentlemen; through various rock incarnations, including his 2014 album of songs inspired by Melbourne, City Of Dreams, and his newest project Spectres Of Love; through to his dynamic solo shows interpreting the work of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen.
Armed with his deep baritone and his trusty nylon-stringed guitar, he will be teaming up with his talented sister Anushka at Bella Union to create a sibling super-duo.Anushka has a thoroughly captivating voice and an incredible stage presence. She has toured Australia and the world amazing audiences with her inimitable style. There is simply no other performer like her. This will be Anushka's return to the stage after a few years break working on new material, so expect sparks to fly between the two performers.
Mikelangelo and Anushka will be showcasing a selection of new songs on the show. It will be a wild musical adventure, full of beautiful and surreal twists and turns, delivered with humour, passion and intrigue.
And the family connection doesn't stop there...Wednesday 5th April is their father Vinko's 80th birthday, so he'll be joining the duo on stage to sing a rousing Croatian folk songs or two!
The New Pigface Stringband features the trans-pacific old-time duo Kat Mear (AU) and Aaron Searcy (USA) playing Appalachian folk music from the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Offering a unique mix of twin fiddle, guitar, banjo and vocals, The New Pigface Stringband draws on a deep well of musical tradition to bring the hymns, work ballads, and dance tunes of early Appalachia back to life.
