Presenter: Fred Smith
Website: http://www.fredsmith.com.au/
Event Duration: 150 minutes

Songwriter, traveller, and raconteur, Fred Smith will be telling stories from his new memoir The Dust of Uruzgan, and playing songs from the acclaimed album of the same name.  Described as “a triumph of poetic journalism” and “finely observed snapshots of a harsh, sad and funny reality”, he weaves song and story to offer what 15 years of news reports failed to convey: an understanding of what was going on over there in the dust of Uruzgan.

Fred worked alongside Australian troops for two years. His job was to understand the complex web of tribal and patronage networks that made things tick in Uruzgan province.  Now he has written his experiences into a remarkable book to be published by Allen and Unwin in time for Father’s Day 2016.

Fred will be accompanied by Liz Frencham on double bass, Carl Pannuzzo on piano/percussion and projections of some stunning photos from Afghanistan.
